Last updated: May 31, 2026 for Battlefield 6 Season 3, Warlords: Supremacy.
I keep a tally in my head of what kills me in the close range, and in Season 3 it is almost always one of two SMGs. If I round a corner on Empire State and evaporate before my screen even registers the enemy, I died to an SCW10 or an SGX nine times out of ten.
That tells you everything about the SMG meta this season. These guns own the inside of a building. The trick is that the Season 3 recoil patch hit a few of them hard, so the rankings shuffled. The fastest killers got twitchier, and the steady ones quietly became the smart pick for anyone who plays a few nights a week.
Here are the SMGs worth your time right now, ranked, with the build I run on each. If you only take one thing away: the SGX is the easiest top-tier gun in the game, and you should main it without guilt.
Casual pick of the season: the SGX. Lowest fuss, clean iron sights, and you get a great build without even maxing it. Skip to its section if you just want the answer.
When to even run an SMG
SMGs win the close range and lose past it. They thrive on the small, tight maps and the indoor objectives, and they fall off hard on the big combined-arms maps like the new Railway to Golmud. So pick your map. If you are pushing buildings on Empire State, Hagen Base, or Cairo Bazaar, an SMG is the right call. On a sprawling Conquest layout, lean on a carbine or rifle instead.
Two attachments belong on every SMG build below: a suppressor to stay off the minimap, and the violet laser for better accuracy while you strafe, since SMG fights are all movement.
1. SGX: the easy king
The SGX has been the best SMG since launch, and the recoil patch did not touch it. Low recoil, fast handling, clean iron sights, and a competitive time-to-kill at every range an SMG cares about. It even beats some rifles at mid-range, which it has no business doing.
The best part for a casual is the build cost. You get an optimal setup without maxing the gun out.
Build: CQB suppressor, extended barrel, slim angled grip, violet laser, 30 fast mag, standard ammo. Done.
If a gun on this list is going to carry you through a rough night, it is this one.
2. PW5A3 (the MP5): the versatile one
The MP5 is a low-recoil SMG that fries up close and still competes out to a surprising range for the class. It has been a top pick the entire life of the game, and the recoil patch barely grazed it. The clean iron sights save you points, and the hip fire is strong enough for true run-and-gun play.
Build: flash compensator, extended barrel, alloy or slim angled grip, violet laser, 30 round mag, hollow point for the headshot boost.
This is the SMG I hand someone who wants close-range punch with a little more forgiveness than the fast killers below.
3. CZ3A1: the close-range monster (with a catch)
The CZ3A1 has one of the fastest kill times in the game inside a hallway. The catch is that it took one of the heaviest hits from the Season 3 random recoil change, so it kicks more than it used to. Tap fire it in short bursts and it stays accurate, almost like you are full auto. If you spray, you will spread shots everywhere.
Build: CQB suppressor, light barrel, slim angled grip, violet laser, 30 round mag, mag catch.
A great gun if you can manage the kick. A frustrating one if you cannot, which is why it sits below the steadier picks for a casual audience.
4. SCW10: the fastest kill in the game
The SCW10 has the quickest time-to-kill of any gun in Battlefield 6, period. Dying to it feels like dying to a shotgun. The recoil patch made it a touch harder to hold, so treat it as a pure close-range tool and do not pick fights at range with it.
Build: light barrel, 25 round extended mag, FMJ, mini flex, with a laser if you have points left.
The 25-round mag is the move, since the speed means you can fight multiple enemies before reloading. When you stay on target, nothing wins the first three feet faster.
5. KV9: the glass cannon
The KV9 is another blistering-fast killer, held back by a small magazine and heavy ammo burn. If you land your shots, it melts. If you miss, you are reloading in the open. It rewards accuracy more than any SMG on this list, so it sits at the bottom of the top five rather than higher.
Build: standard suppressor, extended mag (23 round), violet laser, alloy vertical grip, standard ammo. Take as much ammo as the budget allows.
Honorable mentions
The MP7 and the SL9 sit just outside the top five. The SL9 in particular got a real bump in Season 3, since its burst-fire mode now competes with the MP5 and runs almost no recoil. If you like a low-recoil burst gun, it is worth a look. The USG-90, the P90 in spirit, has great velocity and a big mag but a sluggish feel that keeps it out of the top tier for me.

Final word
The SMG meta in Season 3 comes down to one question: can you hold the gun steady when it matters? If yes, the SCW10 and CZ3A1 will reward you with the fastest kills in the game. If you would rather not gamble on a tired night, the SGX does 90 percent of the work for none of the stress. I run the SGX most weeks and feel zero shame about it.
